The Crossing Backpackers, Area Information, Taupo, Turangi, Ohakune, Whakapapa Village

Taupo, Turangi & Ohakune

Lake Taupo is Australasia's largest fresh water lake. To give you an idea, it's about the size of Singapore. With the stunning mountain peaks as a backdrop, a buzzing nightlife, fantastic fishing and other water sports, great shopping, its central location and a huge range of outdoor activities, Taupo is a very popular place to visit and easy to reach for a day trip while staying at The Crossing Backpackers.

Turangi is known as 'The Trout Fishing Capital of the World'. Turangi is located right beside a world renowned trout fishing settlement and is close to a number of tourist attractions. The Tongariro River has earned its reputation through the huge numbers of large silver trout that tempt anglers. Every pool has its own stories of classic fights between angler and fish.

Ohakune is the town at the southern gateway to the Tongariro National Park. Ohakune is also known as the aprs ski capital of the North Island, and the Carrot Capital of New Zealand. The town is a forestry centre, a farming centre, and home to around 1400 people. The Carrot Carnival and the Winter Mardi-Gras in July and August are fantastic annual events and the art festivals, snow events, local country fairs, on-snow entertainment and flower shows are great occasions too.
